Birmingham Canal Navigations Society (BCNS) is delighted to announce that their Canal Festival and Boat Rally for 2020 will be held on the Bradley Arm of the BCN.

The Birmingham Canal Navigations Society (BCNS) celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018 marking a significant milestone in seeking to conserve, improve and encourage a wide range of interests in the 100 mile network of Birmingham and Black Country waterways known as the Birmingham Canal Navigations The Birmingham Canal Navigations now make up 100miles of canals across the West Midlands.

The hub of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, which last year celebrated its 250th birthday, is the bustling city centre junction at Gas Street Basin. Here, colourful boats and historic canal architecture sit side-by-side with vibrant modern restaurants, cafes and bars.

Today, the canals are still important and we’re working with the charity, Canal & River Trust, to make sure Birmingham’s waterways are here for everyone to enjoy, now and forever.

BCNS has for many years organised an annual boat rally which seeks to bring the spotlight onto some of the lesser known parts of the canal network. In 2019 it held a very successful two day event at Brownhills attracting over 50 boats but more importantly hundreds of local people who were encouraged to come to visit and re-connect with their canal. Research shows that being next to water makes you happier and healthier and we want local people to come and discover their local canal and spend time by water

For 2019 the BCNS in partnership with the Canal & River Trust, are holding a canal event on Saturday 16th May at the current terminus of the Bradley Canal by the Trust’s lock gate workshops. This event will be attended by boats but more importantly both charities wish to encourage local people to visit the canal, enjoy the natural environment of this green corridor and see the work of the skilled Canal & River Trust craftsmen as they construct lock gates.

The event will have stall holders, a real ale bar, boat trips and an opportunity to look at the restoration opportunity for the remainder of the Bradley Canal to reinstate the link down to the Walsall Canal. Guided walks will be conducted to demonstrate the route and see the line of the original canal including some of the old lock chambers.

Please note the boaters event is for the weekend but the site will only be open to the public on Saturday.
